Writer's Guidelines

Bulletin, Allegheny County Medical Society

General Information

All articles should be of interest to the medical society's physician readers, their practice of medicine, and health care in the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Most Bulletin articles are staff-generated or solicited from regular sources, although unsolicited articles are ocassionally accepted for publication. All submissions are subject to review by the Editorial Board. First-time writers should include a brief vita and a telephone number and/or
e-mail address where readers can contact them with any questions. Call managing editor Linda Smith with questions (412) 321-5030, ext. 105, or e-mail lsmith@acms.org.
Mechanical Requirements and DeadlinesPlease attach a Word file to an e-mail directed to the managing editor (lsmith@acms.org). Articles must be received no later than six weeks prior to publication. For more information on deadlines or requirements, call Linda Smith at (412) 321-5030, ext. 105.
OPINION COLUMNS:These articles reflect the opinion of the individual author, not that of the medical society or the Bulletin. Local, state and national perspectives are welcome. Please try to stay within the recommended word count on these shorter, opinion-based columns.

These specialized articles are intended to inform our physician readers on a variety of topics of interest to them. Most articles are generated internally, although guest writers ocassionally contribute columns.
Pill Box

These specialized articles report/investigate pharmaceutical topics by a panel of regular contributors.
Financial Health
900-1,500 words
Queries are welcome.
These articles should educate the reader about investing. Information should be factually correct and teach general investing principles rather than unique investing strategies. Articles must be free of commercial bias and should not promote particular investment advisors, companies or investments. Author should not pose rhetorical questions unless they are answered in the article. Author should not advise reader to call him or her.
Legal Report
900-1,500 words
Queries are welcome.
These articles are written by attorneys on a variety of legal topics that are of interest to physicians, including changes in legislation. The articles may cite case law, but must not be too technical. They are largely solicited from a pool of local legal experts.
Practice Management
900-1,500 words
Queries are welcome.
Practice management experts contribute these articles on a variety of topics intended to inform physicians on managing a medical office (i.e., billing, reception, employee relations). Reprints from previously published articles are sometimes used if they are current and well written. Care must be taken that thes articles are in no way self-promotional or commercial in nature.
Technology & Medicine
900-1,500 words
Queries are welcome.
This column is intended to fill a need for information on new technologies used in a physician office (not clinical). The Editorial Board is seeking qualified contributors. Reprints from previously published articles are sometimes used if they are current and well written. These articles must not be self-promotional or commercial in nature.
Profiles
900-1,500 words
Profiles are internally assigned and staff-written, focusing on a particular physician's accomplishments and/or life interests. They are biographical in nature.
Features
900-1,500 words
Queries are welcome.
Feature articles are factual and informative in nature. They generally explore a topic in more depth than other columns and are frequently staff-written or solicited. Topics very widely but should always address the needs of our physician readers.

Please note:
The Bulletin does not publish articles that are clinical in nature.

Special Reports
600-900 words
Special Reports deal with a single specific topic and often are time-sensitive in nature. Many are contributed by various community organizations such as the heath department or non-profit organizations.
