Ralph C. Wilde Leadership Award

Stanley M. Marks, MD, is the 2018 Ralph C. Wilde Leadership Award recipient. This award recognizes a physician who demonstrates exceptional skill in their clinical care of patients and dedication to the ideals of the medical profession as a teacher or profession leader.

Dr. Marks is chairman of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, one of the largest integrated cancer networks in the country with more than 60 locations and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in western Pennsylvania. He is director of clinical services and chief medical officer of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center; chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at UPMC Shadyside; and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Marks is currently the chair of Cancer Treatment Services International, a company that facilitates the provision of world-class healthcare in underserved areas, especially in India. He also served as chair of the National Policy Board of U.S. Oncology.

Dr. Marks’ charitable work has forever changed this community. Throughout his professional career, he has served as president of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and president and chairman of the Allegheny County Medical Society. Dr. Marks is active in local non-profit healthcare organizations, having served on the board of directors of the American Cancer Society, Pittsburgh Research Institute, Pittsburgh Pain Society, Protech Compliance, Jewish Healthcare Foundation and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He is a co-founder of the Western Pennsylvania Juvenile Diabetes Foundation chapter, the founding medical director of Allegheny/Forbes Hospice and a co-founder of the Cancer Caring Center, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping patients and families cope with the emotional impact of cancer. He and his wife, Nikol, are also avid supporters of the Humane Society and Animal Rescue League, the United Jewish Federation and the Pittsburgh Food Bank.

Dr. Marks has authored numerous publications and is the recipient of several awards, including the National Research Service Award from the United States Public Health Service. He is known as a national thought leader in hematology/oncology and is highly recognized for the personal attention and care he provides his patients. Although he’s cared for some of Pittsburgh’s biggest names, Dr. Marks treats all his patients as though they were his only one—often calling or texting them at home or spending extended amounts of time with them and their families. His clinical expertise, compassion for his patients, and enthusiasm for teaching are evidenced by his receiving the Golden Apple for Excellence in Teaching and the Pittsburgh Business Times Health Care Hero Award.

The Dr. Stanley Marks Endowed Research Fund at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center was founded by grateful patients in 2006 and has raised more than $5 million for cancer research. In October 2016, Dr. Marks was honored by UPMC and his medical partners at Oncology Hematology Associates (OHA) through the establishment of the Stanley M. Marks – OHA Endowed Chair in Hematology/Oncology Leadership. The permanent endowment supports the recruitment and retention of leaders in the University of Pittsburgh Division of Hematology/Oncology and trains professionals devoted to research and improved treatments for cancer patients.

Dr. Marks received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973. He completed his residency training at UPMC Presbyterian, and fellowship training in clinical medicine and research medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Dana Farber Cancer Center.
