Mark W. Guy, MD

Specialty:  Family Medicine.
Graduate:  University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, 1990.
ACMS:  1991.
Allegheny General Hospital; UPMC Mercy Hospital.

Dr. Guy has lived in, and provided primary care services to, the North Side and Northern Boroughs of Pittsburgh for 20 years. A 1990 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Guy spent the following year working in a mission hospital as a clinic and hospital physician at Matru Jong Hospital in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Upon his return to Pittsburgh, he completed his residency in family practice at St. Margaret’s Memorial Hospital in 1994.

After his residency, Dr. Guy co-founded Community Primary Care, a full service, community based primary care practice in the Northern Boroughs of Pittsburgh.  He and his partners also established the North Side Christian Health Center (NSCHC) in 1995, a not for profit, faith based, inner city clinic to improve access to health care services for uninsured and underinsured patients at risk.  Dr. Guy served as a staff physician at the clinic through 2010.  Today, the NSCHC provides comprehensive primary and preventive medical and dental care to approximately 5,500 patients.

Over the last decade Dr. Guy’s focus has been on improving health care outcomes using LEAN principles to integrate and improve practice delivery systems. He is passionate about using his experience with the use and implementation of the EHR, clinical practice, informatics and disruptive change management to fundamentally improve the safety, quality of care and patient experience delivered by health care systems. Dr. Guy continues to practice primary care part time at Community Primary Care, while assisting in the transformation of the ambulatory clinical area of the Allegheny Health Network.

In addition, Dr. Guy supports a small, community based addiction clinic for those addicted to opiates without access to medical support for recovery. He provides a particular sensitivity and focus on behavioral medicine in the setting of primary care, especially related to mood disorders and family/marriage dynamics.

Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, Dr. Guy continues to dedicate himself to teaching future family physicians and to provide outstanding individualized care to his patients. “He is a wonderful physician who puts his patients and their medical needs first. He cares about each as a person and not just a patient,” says one of the patients who nominated Dr. Guy for this award.

Dr. Guy lives on the North Side of Pittsburgh, where he and his wife Christine raised their three children.
