Past Programs

The Pittsburgh Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, with sponsorship by Exact Sciences Corporation, met Nov. 17 at LeMont Restaurant in Mt. Washington.

The guest speaker was Adam B. Elfant, MD, Associate Head, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Associate Professor of Medicine, Director, Therapeutic Endoscopy & Endoscopy Oncology, Cooper Hospital/ University Medical Center, University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Camden, N.J.

Dr. Elfant presented “Cologuard: Stool DNA Testing for Colorectal Cancer Screening.”

In August of this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Cologuard, a stool-based colorectal cancer in vitro diagnostic device. Cologuard is intended for the qualitative detection of colorectal neoplasia- associated DNA markers and for the presence of occult hemoglobin in human stool. A positive result may indicate the presence of colorectal cancer or advanced adenoma and should be followed by diagnostic colonoscopy. Cologuard is indicated to screen adults of either sex, 50 years of age or older, who are at typical average risk for colorectal cancer.
